Wrestling
Beast Wrestling Team is a youth wrestling club for youth ages 6-18. Practice takes place every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at Babbitt School Gym. Wrestling starts mid-November through March.
2026 Open mat takes place June 8th through August 17 every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the Babbitt Community Center Gym. No open mat June 28 through July 7, 2026. Open mat is a great opportunity to grow your wrestling skills and stamina in the off season. All youth are welcome, including high school wrestling team members who want an off-season workout.
Parent Booster Club meetings will take place once a month to organize events and conduct official club business. The first booster club meeting will take place June 8, 2026 at 5:30 p.m. during open mat. Future meeting dates TBD but will be posted here and on our events calendar. New members are always welcome!
Wrestling is an individual sport but the team trains together throughout the year and supports each other’s development on and off the mat.
Throughout the season there are several open tournaments across the state. Wrestlers may choose to test their skills on the mat against other wrestlers within their weight class. See our events page for more info on tournaments.
Youth Wrestling and its Role in Character Development
Discipline and Work Ethic - Wrestling requires consistent training to build physical conditioning and refine technique. Wrestling success comes from hard work, dedication and endurance. Regular training builds good habits and consistency which can transfer to school. Goal setting and progress tracking teaches perseverance and determination.
Confidence and Self Esteem - Wrestlers realize a sense of accomplishment as they master skills, techniques and win matches. Facing fears and overcoming obstacles in a competitive atmosphere can help boost confidence and raise self-assurance. Supportive coaches and teammates reinforce positive self-image, often helping kids find their inner strength and their voice.
Respect and Sportsmanship - Wrestling emphasizes honoring opponents, coaches, and officials. Following rules, shaking hands after matches, and supporting teammates teach empathy, fairness, and accountability — values that extend beyond the mat. Lifelong friendships are forged through camaraderie, and team spirit.
Resilience and Mental Toughness - Each match is a test of both physical and mental strength. Wrestlers learn to handle pressure, adapt to challenges, and recover from setbacks. This builds emotional resilience and a growth mindset, where losses are seen as lessons rather than failures.
Physical and Emotional Benefits - Beyond character, wrestling develops full-body strength, agility, endurance, and coordination. The physical demands push limits, while the mental focus required under pressure enhances concentration and problem-solving skills.
Youth wrestling combines physical fitness with emotional growth, discipline, and social skills — helping young people become not only better athletes but also more confident, respectful, and resilient individuals.

Tommy’s Wrestling Story;
“I've been wrestling since I was 7 years old. I was in the same class as our high school coach’s son and somehow, he convinced me to try it out. I loved the intensity and how easily hard work translated to success. As I got older, I really learned to love the fight-loving the figurative struggle, but also the literal combative skills.
I was a 3x MN state entrant and placed 4th my senior year. Then I went to wrestle for Augsburg where I was a 3x national qualifier, 3 year captain and member of the 2015 NCAA championship team. After that I coached at UW-La Crosse for 2 years and had the opportunity to coach several all-Americans before going back to coach at Augsburg where I was a part of the 2019 Championship team.”
